Backpacking

Jeremy and I went backpacking in the Smokies this weekend. It was fun, kinda. Actually it was a lot of work and very tiring, but it may have been worth it. We had a map of different loops in the Smokies and each was labeled either moderate, hard, or strenuous. We picked the shortest "moderate" trail, which was about 13 miles. Long story short, we did part of another trail and half of that trail and ended up hiking about 14 miles, 8 the first day about about 6 the second. Most of the first day was uphill, er, up mountain. It was rough. The second day was better since it was mostly downhill.

There weren't too many other people out; we saw two other groups of backpackers and a few groups of people on horses. No one else was at our campsite though. It was pretty peaceful, but I was so hot, sweaty, and tired to really appreciate the fact that we were in the mountains and all the beauty that was there. Next time, next time.

Pictures are here, but not in any type of order. They are also on facebook for those of you cool enough for facebook.

When you were trudging up the mountain, tired, thirsty, hungry, feet hurting, legs sore and the backpack feeling like it weighed a ton, did a thought come across your mind and did you ask yourself "am I having fun yet"?? Hope you had a good time anyway. Its good to get away once in a while. No Worries

Love the photos! Looks and sounds like a great time...in retrospect you will probably agree. I'm envious. I love doing things in the out-of-doors. Nothing beats nature's serenity! Question: Did you know you were in bear territory before going? Did you study up on what to do if you see on? That old song might come in handy....going on a bear hunt....

Yeah, we knew that there could be bears around. There was info about what to do if we came across any when we were filling out the backpacking permit. We didn't see any this trip, but did see one elsewhere in the Smokies about a month back, but we were in our car at the time.

Sounds great. When I was young I would not have liked to do that. But now if I could I think it would be wonderful. Driving through the smokies is nice too. We did it just about everytime we went from Punta Gorda to West Virginia. Glad I can write and read again in the blogger.

:) I like mom's "going on a bear hunt." lol I'm very envious! The closest I've gotten to this is going to Marlatt Memorial Park with Betsy, Logan, and the dogs on Tuesday evening. One of the main paths goes to "Top of the World." I love that view of Manhattan and being able to see everything from the dam to downtown. I much prefer views of the wild over views of a city, any day.
